Process

Delive

The Innovation Lab is dedicated to helping Notre Dame students, faculty and staff, as well as members of our local community. We provide a place where ingenuity and innovation can flow, from the most basic ideas to a fully realized product ready for market.

We enthusiastically engage our clients in any—or all three—of the phases of our process: design, prototype, and launch.

In addition to the services we offer to startup companies and entrepreneurs, we are active in the community to inspire as many as we can to fulfill their dreams—or just to gain knowledge and experience in prototyping and product development.

  1. Design

Three industrial designers are on staff to work side-by-side with clients to convert rough sketches into digital CAD drawings that can then be iterated and perfected. Non-Lab designers are welcome to use any one of our six high-powered workstations, free of charge.

  2. Prototype

We maintain three, professional grade, Stratasys 3D printers (Objet 350 Connex 3, F370, Objet30 Prime) that enable rapid prototyping in full-color acrylic plastic, as well as rubber-like materials, all within a large 14 x 14 x 14 inch build area. Two workhorse laser cutters, both small and large format, are available for cutting and engraving wood, cardboard, and thin sheet steel. Accompanying shop tools are also on site to serve the community. The Innovation Lab also maintains a network of local production capabilities to create parts in a range of additional materials.

  3. Launch

Launch Space is available for all clients to make their assemblies, create MVPs, and also incubate early-stage startups in coordination with IDEA Center staff. This includes six dedicated startup bays (available for rent), four general use work benches, and two meeting areas. Lab equipment also facilitates small batch manufacturing to enable your company launch. The entirety of the Innovation Lab may be reserved for ideation sessions, pitch events, or club meetings.
